NEW YORK (WABC) — Most of us try to save money, but it's so hard!

However, a viral trend could make it easier.

It’s called “The No Spending Challenge” and it’s a huge success.

Instead of getting you to buy, influencers encourage you not to spend.

Imagine some people doing this every week for a whole year, or a month, and even challenging each other to get through a day.

The challenge is to resolve not to spend money on anything new and to avoid unnecessary expenses.

More and more participants are sharing how they set their own rules.

Of course, you have to pay your bills like phone, utilities, rent, etc.

Then make a list of things you don't want to spend your money on, like new clothes, makeup, or shoes.

Some people take on the challenge of giving up coffee or restaurants and resolving to only eat at home.

One woman said she saves $200 a week just by not eating out.

There are free downloadable trackers to assist you on your journey.

Start with one day and color it green if you can get through the whole day without spending any money.

No Apple Pay, no Amazon, no online shopping on your phone, and no going to stores. Then mark the days you spend money in red.

According to experts, this reward system is a good spectacle, especially for families and children who compete with each other.

Tips for success: Start small and begin with your own or your child's closet. Get everything out. For makeup and skincare, try to use what you have first before buying something new.

Go shopping in your closet!

You can resell, upcycle or sell your unwanted clothes, shoes and accessories through ThredUp.

Depop, Postmark – there are a number of sites that all work a little differently and some will collect your items or send you a bag to post.

These will be evaluated and you will receive a cost estimate, which you can accept or reject.

Turn your closet into cash.

Some websites allow you to list your item and sell it to the highest bidder, then ship it to your buyer.

Some tips for these sites are: the more you list and the more high-quality designer items you feature, the better.

Buyers want to see that you have bought and sold a lot and have good customer reviews.

But it's a great way to get some free money for things that are just collecting dust in a drawer.
