PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – While Pirates fans on all three rivers are excited about 22-year-old pitching phenom Paul Skenes, that excitement isn’t limited to the city of Pittsburgh.

According to trading card appraiser Professional Sports Authenticator, Skenes owns the most sought-after active pitcher baseball card.

According to their data since March 2024, Skenes is not only the most sought-after pitcher, but also ranks 17th among all active MLB players.

He also has the second most sought-after card among active and former pitchers, only Nolan Ryan is ahead of him.

Since May 2024, PSA has seen a 5,000% increase in Skenes card submissions after its first officially licensed card hit the market in December 2023. The peak was in February when they graded more than 2,000 Skenes trading cards.

In terms of demand, Skenes cards have also ranked 22nd overall among active and former baseball players since March.

Since being recalled from the Pirates and making his MLB debut on May 11, Skenes has made seven starts and allowed 53 strikeouts, a 2.29 ERA, seven walks and 32 hits in 39.1 innings pitched.

The Pirates selected Skenes first in the 2023 MLB Draft after a successful college career at the U.S. Air Force Academy and Louisana State University.

The Pirates are back in action tonight, beginning a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays at PNC Park. Tonight's game begins at 6:40 p.m.
