At Wednesday's press conference, all eyes were on Andres Cortes and Abraham Nova ahead of their 10-round knockout main event tonight (June 21) at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas.

Last July, prior to Cortes' fight against Xavier Martinez, there was a heated exchange of blows between junior lightweights Cortes (21-0, 12 KOs) and Nova (23-2, 16 KOs).

But compared to the heated debate last year, the second act of the press conference was rather subdued.

“I started this fight,” said 26-year-old Cortes. And you have to be careful what you ask for.

“I believe in my team. I believe in my abilities and in everything I do. So I'm ready for anything.”

Confident local hero Cortes believes two consecutive stoppage wins over Bryan Chevalier and Martinez, as well as a win over 30-year-old former title challenger Nova, will give him a title shot.

“There are no distractions,” Cortes said. “The people who come here will come because they support me, and you will listen to them.”

However, Nova did not let that deter her and promised to pose a huge challenge.

“For me it's very simple: win,” said Nova. “Winning itself is a skill. There is no pressure at all. I come, perform and do my job.”

In contrast to his usual talkativeness, Cortes appeared reserved at the press conference, dressed all in black and wearing sunglasses. Nova, on the other hand, spoke at length and feels underestimated, having only lost to defending champion Robeisy Ramirez and in his last fight to O'Shaquie Foster.

“I have incredible skills,” Nova added. “I feel like my ability is really underrated. I've made a lot of improvements from my past fights. I've corrected some things in camp and staying active has helped me in training. I feel like my skills, experience and the journey I've taken in my boxing career will prevail and get the win on Friday night.

“I need credible names. Andres Cortes is undefeated and has beaten some good names. This is the kind of fight I need to get back in the running for the world title.”
