CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – The Franklin County Commissioners have issued a statement regarding the future of South Mountain Golf Course.

Franklin County is making the following statement regarding the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR)'s plans to terminate its lease for the South Mountain Golf Course.

The Franklin County Commissioners have heard from many local residents and organizations who support the preservation of the South Mountain Golf Course. We have also heard from a number of individuals and groups who support the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources' (DCNR) decision to repurpose the property to create a visitor and resource center for those who wish to recreate in Michaux State Forest. Both sides have made compelling arguments and both groups' positions are valid.

We respect DCNR's authority not to renew the golf course lease. However, we urge DCNR to listen to feedback from both sides to find a solution that is accommodating to all parties. The Commissioners have sent a letter to Governor Shapiro communicating their position and urged his administration to consider the intense public outcry before making any further decisions regarding the future of South Mountain Golf Course.

We are confident that with proper planning and consideration, DCNR can reach a compromise that will satisfy both sides of this issue and allow outdoor recreation enthusiasts with diverse interests to continue to enjoy and utilize the natural beauty of Franklin County, Michaux State Forest, and the South Mountain region.
