West Virginia University basketball coach Darian DeVries has named Cavel Witter the Mountaineers’ assistant coach/video and scouting coordinator.

Last season, Witter served as an assistant coach and director of operations at Drake, helping the Bulldogs to 28 wins and a berth in the NCAA Tournament after Drake won the Missouri Valley Conference Championship.

“We are excited to have Cavel join our team,” DeVries said. “As a former player of mine at Creighton and as an assistant coach at Drake, he brings a great understanding of how we do things on a daily basis. He has a really good feel for the game and can pass that knowledge on to the players.”

Witter joined Drake's staff after two seasons at Georgia Southern, where he served as graduate manager.

Prior to Georgia Southern, he spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Lincoln University of Missouri, helping the team to 41 wins, including 18 in his first season, and leading the team to its fourth consecutive postseason appearance and a trip to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament.

Witter was a three-year performer at Creighton from 2007-10, when DeVries was the Bluejays' assistant coach, and holds the program record with 32 free throws. He was named to the MVC All-Bench Team in 2008, and in the final game of the 2008 regular season, Witter scored 42 points in a double-overtime win over Bradley, setting an arena record at Quest Center Omaha and ranking eighth on Creighton's all-time scoring list. Witter played 101 games in his career, helping the Bluejays to 67 wins and three consecutive playoff appearances.

After earning a bachelor's degree in public relations from Creighton University in 2010, Witter played professionally in Portugal and Germany before competing in the G League for the Iowa Energy. He was named an All-Bundesliga player in 2013, a First Team All-Import selection in 2014 and a Eurobasket.com All-German Team selection in 2015-16.
