SANTA MARIA, Calif. – The Santa Maria Police Council is hosting its annual golf tournament and comedy night all day Friday at the Santa Maria Country Club.

The popular event is now in its 15th year and is the largest fundraiser of the year for the nonprofit organization that financially supports the Santa Maria Police Department (SMPD).

This year's tournament is sold out and not only features 140 golfers competing in an 18-hole scramble-style golf tournament, but also a comedy show in the clubhouse afterwards.

The Santa Maria Police Council hopes to raise more than $100,000 from the event, with some of the money already earmarked for the purchase of a new drone for the police department.

Since its inception in 2007, the Police Council has raised nearly $2 million to provide the department with valuable equipment and training.

According to the Police Board, equipment purchased through its fundraising efforts includes, but is not limited to, armored Bearcat vehicles, “airsoft” training weapons, crime lab equipment, gem cart batteries and upgrades, restraints, sniffer dog units, sniffer dog training, sniffer dog training bite suits, SMPD Explorer Program patches, a state-of-the-art property and evidence management system, SWAT simulation/specialty training weapons, tasers for every officer, and night vision training.
