WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) – A new way to play golf opened at The Grove Friday morning.

For the first time, LIV Golf competed in Tennessee, bringing crowds and energy all weekend long. LIV Golf, an up-and-coming league founded in 2021, is known as a relaxed version of men's professional golf and its motto is “Golf, but louder.”

“The loud music creates the right atmosphere,” said LIV golf participant Phil Jacobs.

Forget strict dress codes and silent crowds. The LIV Golf Tournament at The Grove kicked off with paratroopers landing on the first hole, fireworks and cheers. The crowd was especially excited as LIV golf fans watched their favorite players like Bryson Dechameau, John Rahm and Carlos Ortiz enter the course.

“Great fun,” said LIV golf commentator Arlo White. “This is not your grandfather's golf tournament.”

“I love the concert element,” said Nashville LIV Golf participant Barrett Wood.

Unlike the PGA, LIV Golf has 54 holes instead of 72. It also uses shotgun mode instead of a staggered format, which makes for faster play. The tournament consists of 48 players divided into teams of 12 led by a captain.

“There are so many sports around the world that have shortened versions,” White explained. “But that doesn't mean it's not extremely competitive golf at a world-class level, which it absolutely is.”

The game's varied format can cause mixed feelings among golfers who may be accustomed to the game experience.

“I think it was natural for people to say, 'Wait a minute, a slightly different format, a shotgun start, only 54 holes,'” Wood said. “But I think it's a little early to tell.”

“I see people ranting about LIV Golf online and stuff like that,” said LIV Golf participant Andy Alvord. “But if you've never been to a tournament, you have no idea what this is about.”

White told News 2 that people are interested in this new format and the numbers show this best.

“The game of golf is the same,” Jacobs said. “It's really the environment that's different.”

A previous tournament this year in Australia attracted 94,000 fans.

LIV Golf is expecting a high turnout this weekend. A representative from LIV Golf told News 2 that they are almost fully booked on Friday. They also expect tickets to sell out for Saturday and Sunday, and the tour has only just begun.

“The next three days are going to be wild here because Nashville has launched the LIV Golf League,” White said. “I hope we come back every year after this. But from what I know, tens of thousands will come and it's completely sold out.”

After Nashville, the tour continues to Spain and the UK before returning to the USA for the final rounds.

“This is our first time here,” White said. “It's the 12th state we're visiting with the LIV Golf League, but we're also taking this around the world. That's the mantra of the LIV Golf League, to take the game worldwide.”
