The world's best UFC fighter was not happy that Conor McGregor delayed his UFC return.

After McGregor announced on Friday that he broke a toe while training for his UFC 303 main event against Michael Chandler, Islam Makhachev poked fun at the Irishman on social media.

“You don't need a pinky toe for a fight lol. Coward 🐔,” Makhachev wrote on X.

Makhachev then published a post in which he took Chandler’s side and expressed his “condolences.”

Earlier this month, Makachev, 32, defeated veteran fan favorite Dustin Poirier in the fifth round to retain his lightweight belt, which he has held since October 2022.

Ironically, Makhachev himself had long leaves of absence compared to most headliners.

Eight months passed between the Dagestani's fights with Alexander Volkanovski in 2023, then he waited another eight months before facing Poirier on June 1.

Makhachev has frequently expressed his thoughts on the broader UFC landscape on social media in the past.

For example, the champion gave his assessment after the legendary BMF duel between Justin Gaethje and Max Holloway at UFC 300 in April.

With a record of 26-1-0 and undefeated since October 2015, Makhachev is widely considered the best fighter in the UFC today and has already made a name for himself as one of the greatest lightweights of all time.

However, UFC President Dana White did not praise Makhachev as much as most fans and experts.

Speaking to reporters after Makhachev's win in Atlantic City, White said Jon Jones – who hasn't fought since March 2023 – is still the No. 1 contender over Makhachev in the pound-for-pound fight.

Rumors have been circulating about a fight between McGregor and Chandler for over a year, but they are still looking for a definitive date and venue.

The two competed against each other as coaches on “The Ultimate Fighter: Season 31” last summer, with the coaches of the two teams traditionally competing against each other in the Octagon.

According to UFC insider Ariel Helwani, the company intends to finally hold a duel between the two well-known names in August or September.

Neither McGregor nor Chandler have entered the Octagon since November 2022, and the two appear to be turning down other opportunities in search of their exclusive fight.
