Since the pandemic, there has been a significant increase in homeschooling. Now, another educational trend called “unschooling” is gaining momentum and sparking controversy and debate online.

In June, spiritual influencer Mami Onami made headlines when she talked about unschooling, or “teaching for free,” her children. “We don't teach our children anything,” she said in a TikTok video. “Everything they learn is either in response to their interest or their questions.” Since there is no set curriculum or school hours, “she and her partner just respond whenever [her kids] want to know something and do our best to make sure they really understand it.” Mami Onami’s statement has sparked backlash on social media, with many commenters questioning her parenting methods. However, she is not the only one pursuing this alternative path to raising her children.
