Austin-Bergstrom recorded record numbers in 2023

As Austin has become more of a hub for business and travel, the airport has attracted record numbers of travelers over the past two years. Austin-Bergstrom welcomed over 22 million travelers in 2023, making it the busiest airport since opening for the second year in a row.

Texas-based Southwest Airlines outperformed other airlines in the number of passengers handled in Austin by over 3 million, carrying a total of 8.5 million passengers.

Why is Austin Airport called Bergstrom?

ABIA began as Del Valle Army Air Base and began operations in September 1942. The base was renamed after Captain John AE Bergstrom, the first Austin native killed in World War II, in November 1943. Although the base closed in 1993, it retained its name when it reopened as an airport in 1999.

The name is not without controversy, and several local groups have pushed for a change to honor other prominent Austin residents, from Lyndon B. Johnson to Willie Nelson.
