The popular Irish crime drama Kin has just been released on Netflix.

The acclaimed series premiered on RTÉ in Ireland in 2021 and both seasons also aired on BBC One for viewers in the UK, but now the first season can be watched on the streaming platform.

“Kin” is about the fictional Kinsella crime family. Aidan Gillen (“Game of Thrones”) and Ciarán Hinds play the roles of rival gang leaders Frank Kinsella and Eamon Cunningham, who are involved in a war.

The series also stars former Hollyoaks actor Emmett J Scanlan as well as Maria Doyle Kennedy (“Outlander”), Charlie Cox (“Daredevil: Born Again”) and Clare Dunne (“The Last Duel”).

The crime drama was well received by critics and viewers alike, achieving a rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes – and continues to have a high rating.

However, the future of “Kin” is uncertain because despite its success, the series has not yet been renewed for a third season.

Speaking to The Irish Sun this week, Scanlan revealed that he did not know if the show would be performed again.

“I wish I had news on that,” he said. “I'm not just saying I don't know. I really don't know. I hope it comes back, I'm very proud to be part of the show. I love the show, I love the cast, the script, everything about it was great. It was so well received, not only [in Ireland] but also in Great Britain.”

Scanlan also expressed his hope that releasing the show on Netflix will bring the series to a wider audience and increase its chances of being renewed.

He said: “I know the show is coming out on Netflix on May 1st and, God willing, it will reach an even bigger audience. Maybe it will reach a bigger fan base and maybe that will be brought up in the discussions about whether or not there will be a third season.”

“If so, then I'll be there immediately. If not, then it was one of the highlights of my career.”
